Bridge Builder was recorded by Doug and his band SHELTER in 1978. Dann Wick played guitar, Don McKinny on Bass, Alex McDougal - drums and featured the Maranatha Strings. Doug played piano, which he seldom does live. The song debuted on the Sangre' Productions (Later Exit Records) compilation album COME BACK SOON. Doug later included it on his solo album NEW CLOTHES.

Lyrics

BRIDGE BUILDER
©1996 DOUG ROBERTSON

I spent all my life burning bridges
Break and burn everywhere I go
And just as I’d broken all connection
I found I had no other way home

I search this island that I live upon
Thinking someway, somehow
To find that someway to get back on
The mainland that I once cut off

(Chorus)
I need a Bridge Builder, to help me get along
I need a Bridge Maker, to make my way back home

The attempts I’ve made to cross the span
They strain my heart, they broke my soul
And I fear that there’s no way for a mortal man
To make his way to where he longs to go
To where he longs to go

(Chorus)
Bridge Builder,
I need a Bridge Maker, to make my way back home

Lord, I hope I find my Bridge Builder
And God, I want you to know
If you send me Your Bridge Maker
I promise You that I’ll come back
